What a deck costs here
Angi puts the national average deck at $8,320, with most projects between $4,339 and $12,652+, or $30–$60+ per square foot (Angi, 2026 data). Walnut Creek-area decks are often larger, taller and on slopes, and Bay Area labor costs more, so quotes here commonly land above the national middle.
| Deck | Area | At $30–$60+/sq ft |
|---|---|---|
| 12 × 12 ft | 144 sq ft | $4,320–$8,640+ |
| 14 × 20 ft | 280 sq ft | $8,400–$16,800+ |
| 20 × 20 ft | 400 sq ft | $12,000–$24,000+ |
National per-square-foot range applied to common sizes. Real quotes can land below or above.

Permits in two lines
Walnut Creek exempts only decks of 200 sq ft or less, no more than 30 in above grade, not attached to the house and not serving the required exit door (City of Walnut Creek). Attached or raised decks need a permit.
Deck permits by city →Fire-zone note
Parts of Orinda, Moraga, Lafayette, Danville and Clayton are mapped Very High fire hazard. Deck surfaces within 10 ft of a new home there must meet California's wildfire tests. The statewide Zone 0 rules are not in force.
What applies and what's pending →Materials
Decking materials, end-on
What the boards are made of decides the upkeep, the look, the heat underfoot and, near the house in a fire zone, whether it meets code.
Redwood
Warm red-brown, naturally decay-resistant heartwood, the classic East Bay deck. Price swings widely by grade.
Materials $5–$35+ /sq ft
Western red cedar
Lighter and softer than redwood, with similar natural resistance. Needs regular sealing to hold color.
Materials $3–$7+ /sq ft
Pressure-treated
The usual framing lumber under any deck. As decking it is the budget choice and needs stain or sealer.
Materials $2–$5+ /sq ft
Capped composite
Wood-plastic core with a protective shell. Low upkeep, grooved edges for hidden fasteners, gets warm in sun.
Materials $12–$22+ /sq ft
Fire-rated options
Decking that meets California's ember and flame tests: listed boards, fire-retardant-treated wood or noncombustible surfaces.
Materials Varies by product
Board-only material prices per square foot from Angi's deck cost guide (national). Labor, framing, railings and permits are extra.
Hillside lots
Built for the slope
Lamorinda and the Walnut Creek hills put many decks on falling ground. That means taller posts with bracing, footings stepped into the hill, sometimes an engineer's design, and stairs down to the yard. It also leaves open space under the deck that needs to stay clear of stored firewood and debris.

Check any contractor
Before you sign, look up the license at the CSLB license check. Deck work is usually done under a B (general building) or C-5 (framing and rough carpentry) license. Ask for proof of workers' compensation if they have employees, and keep the down payment to $1,000 or 10% of the contract, whichever is less.
